If your Intuit Account is not permitted on QuickBooks Desktop’s Customer Account Number, you can generate a new CAN throughout the purchase process. Before you can access the payroll service, you must first install the QuickBooks Desktop financial software on your computer.

Once you’ve purchased a payroll subscription, you need to activate it in QuickBooks desktop. Using the service key, you must activate the payroll service in QuickBooks Desktop.

The steps to do so are provided below:

How to Activate Payroll on QuickBooks Desktop
  1. Log into QuickBooks with an Admin Account
  2. From the main menu, select Employees
  3. Click on Payroll and Select Enter Service Key
  4. Do the following according to preferred option
    • If you use payroll with existing file, then click Add File
    • If you don’t, then click on Skip
  5. Click on Add
  6. Enter the Service Key which you received from Intuit
  7. Click on Next
  8. Select Finish

You have successfully activated payroll in QuickBooks desktop. Now you can use all of the features you were promised by Intuit.

If you don’t have your payroll service key, you can log into your Intuit account. There, you can view purchase history. Click on the payroll subscription, and you’ll find the service key related to your payroll subscription.

After activating Payroll, you’ll find the Payroll Center option under the Employees menu. Payroll center can be used to pay employees, prepare taxes, and store information related to employees. You can also access the same by going to Employee center and selecting the Payroll tab.

Important: Your Payroll service is a contract that renews subsequently, and at the start of each subscription period, your credit card or bank account is automatically charged. Using Cancelation Tool, you can cancel your payroll membership at any time.
